Before You Know It, It’s Spring やがて・いつの間にか・次第に・たちまち
These adverbs describe how a change unfolds. やがて points to something that happens eventually; いつの間にか says it happened without the speaker noticing; 次第[しだい]に describes gradual progress; たちまち means a change happened very quickly.
Before long, spring will arrive and flowers will start blooming in town.
やがて often looks ahead to an expected event that will happen after some time. It is common in narration and careful explanations.
When I noticed, it had gotten dark outside before I knew it.
いつの間にか means that a state changed while the speaker was not aware of when it happened. It often expresses mild surprise.
The new system is gradually becoming widespread.
次第に describes a steady, progressive change. It often appears in news, business, or analytical writing.
The news spread through town in no time.
たちまち describes a result that happened in a very short time, often faster than expected.
In Real Life
A report might say a service is 次第に普及している, “gradually becoming popular.” In a story, いつの間にか can show that time passed unnoticed; たちまち emphasizes how quickly news or a change spread.
Hint · 힌트
やがて = after a while; いつの間にか = without noticing when; 次第に = gradually; たちまち = very quickly. The key difference is the speed and the speaker’s awareness of the change.
