Even Though のに
You waited an hour, even though you had a reservation. のに connects the mismatch between what you expected and what happened, often carrying surprise or frustration.
Even though I live in Japan, my Japanese isn't getting any better.
Even though I have a lot of Japanese friends, my Japanese isn't getting any better.
Hint · 힌트
から and ので both give a reason that leads naturally to the result. のに does the opposite, it announces that the result contradicts what the first clause would lead you to expect, which is why it so often reads as mild frustration.
Even though my mother is free, she's always saying 'I'm busy.'
Even though I'd made a reservation, we couldn't sit down right away.
Hint · 힌트
な-adjectives and nouns insert な before のに, just like before ので, 暇なのに, 先生なのに, while い-adjectives and verbs attach directly with no change. Pay attention to which one a sentence needs, mixing up ので and のに swaps a reason for a contradiction and can flip the meaning entirely.
