Hello, My Name Is... 你好・我叫

You’re meeting a new classmate. A few complete Mandarin phrases let you greet them, exchange names, and say goodbye. The following lessons unpack the sentence patterns behind these first words.

Hello and goodbye

你好!
Nǐ hǎo!
Hello!
老师好!
Lǎoshī hǎo!
Hello, teacher!
再见!
Zàijiàn!
Goodbye!
Hint · 힌트
您好 is a respectful greeting; 你好 is the everyday form. Both use 好, “good.” This lesson shows Mandarin Pinyin; a Cantonese reading is shown only on lessons whose Cantonese wording has been reviewed.

Exchange names

Use 我叫 plus your name. To ask the other person, replace your name with 什么名字. Mandarin normally leaves that question phrase where the answer would appear.

我叫安娜。
Wǒ jiào Ānnà.
My name is Anna.
你叫什么名字?
Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?
What's your name?
我叫李明。很高兴认识你。
Wǒ jiào Lǐ Míng. Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.
I'm Li Ming. Nice to meet you.
Hint · 힌트
我 means “I”; 你 means “you.” 叫 introduces a name here. The next lessons explain 是 for identifying someone and 有 for having something or saying that something exists.
