Hey, Listen. What Was I Saying? さ・さあ

In casual speech, さ has several conversational uses. It can fill a pause, mark a casual assertion similar to よ, or appear as さあ at the start of an action or a moment of hesitation. These are spoken expressions whose tone depends heavily on the speaker and situation.

As a filler, さ gives the speaker a beat to continue and can draw a familiar listener in. It is casual; in a meeting or with someone you don’t know well, start more directly or use ちょっとお話があるのですが.

Sentence-final さ is a casual assertion, similar to よ. It can sound relaxed, masculine, or stylized depending on the speaker, and isn’t a neutral ending for every situation.

さあ can move a group into action (“all right, let’s…”) or show that the speaker is thinking: さあ、どうしよう, “Well, what should I do?” The surrounding sentence and intonation make the difference.

In Real Life
You will hear these forms among friends, in dialogue, and in entertainment. Treat sentence-final さ as a recognition item until you are comfortable with its social tone; a familiar ね or よ is safer for your own everyday speech.
Hint · 힌트
さ between phrases is a filler; sentence-final さ gives a casual assertion; さあ starts a move or a hesitation. The long vowel in さあ is written and pronounced separately.
