LEARN + JAPANESE / 6 of 186 JLPT N5
Wherever, However で
You take the train, write with a pen, and meet at the station. で can mark the means, tool, or place where an action happens; the verb tells you which relationship fits.
I go home by bicycle.
I cut paper with scissors.
Hint · 힌트
で covers the physical tool doing the cutting (ハサミで) and the transport getting you home (自転車で) with the exact same particle. English needs “with” for one and “by” for the other; Japanese doesn’t bother making the distinction.
Please write the report in Japanese.
Is it okay to pay by card?
Actually, I bought it at an online auction.
Hint · 힌트
で also marks the language something is done in (日本語で書く) and the venue or platform something happens on (ネットオークションで買う). If you can rephrase the English as “by means of X,” で is almost always the particle you want.
