Because, and Things Like That -가지고

a

A friend asks how your film club started and what members do. You can give a conversational reason with -아/어 가지고, then list typical activities with -ㄴ다거나. The list gives examples rather than every possibility.

A Spoken Reason

The -아/어 form plus 가지고 often supplies a reason in conversation: 좋아해 가지고, 바빠 가지고. It is frequently shortened to -아/어 갖고. For careful formal writing, a connector such as -아서/어서 is usually a better fit.

yeonghwareul joahae gajigo donghohoee gaiphaesseoyo.
I joined the club because I like films.
iri mana gajigo eoje mot gasseoyo.
I couldn’t go yesterday because I had a lot of work.

List Representative Activities

Present action verbs take -ㄴ다거나 after a vowel and -는다거나 after a consonant: 본다거나, 먹는다거나. ㄹ drops: 놀다 → 논다거나. Adjectives take -다거나 and nouns -(이)라거나. The last item can use an ordinary ending.

jumareneun yeonghwareul bondageona chaegeul ilgeoyo.
On weekends I do things like watch films or read books.
moimyeon yorireul handageona gachi babeul meogeoyo.
When we meet, we do things like cook or eat together.
Hint · 힌트
-거나 can simply connect alternatives. -ㄴ다거나 is useful when naming examples of the sorts of things involved; the list need not be exhaustive.
