As for Me, It's は〜だ

A friend asks where you’re from, and you answer 出身はカナダです. は sets the topic; context fills in the relationship that Japanese leaves unsaid. The topic and the description do not have to be the same kind of thing.

Hint · 힌트
These read naturally as X is Y, straightforward identification, 出身 (hometown) is Canada, 趣味 (hobby) is tennis, no surprises yet.
Hint · 힌트
試合は土曜日です doesn’t literally mean “the match equals Saturday,” it means “the match happens on Saturday,” the relationship (when, where) left for context to fill in. This is why the pattern is sometimes nicknamed the “unagi sentence,” after the classic example 僕はうなぎだ, “I’ll have the eel” (literally “I am eel”), said by someone ordering food, not claiming to be an eel.
Hint · 힌트
Answering どこで会いましょうか, “where should we meet,” with 私は図書館です doesn’t claim “I am a library,” it fills in whatever relationship the question set up, here, “where I’ll be.” The pattern leans hard on shared context, and gets used constantly once you’re used to spotting it.
